GURGAON, India – Hinduism is the third largest religion in the world. According to the CNN website, an estimated 13.8% of the world population is Hindu. Author Munindra Misra gives a glimpse into the heart and expression of this fascinating belief system in his new book, “Chants of Hindu Gods and Goddesses in English Rhyme” (published by Partridge India).
What sets this book apart from other English translations of the Hindu chants Mantras, Stotras, Stuti, Chalisa and Aarti is that, for the first time, these fascinating texts are presented in English rhyme. “Chants of Hindu Gods and Goddesses in English Rhyme” covers the most popular Hindu gods and goddesses including Lord Ganesh, Lord Shiv, Lord Vishnu, Lord Krishna, Lord Ram, Lord Hanuman, Lord Shani, Ma Gayatri, Ma Durga, Ma Laxmi, Ma Mahakali, Ma Saraswati, Ma Ganga and Ma Santoshi. It also features a general description of each deity, which serves as a primer for first-timers.
Misra’s unique approach makes this volume easy to comprehend and its content easy to appreciate. It is a mustread for anyone in need of an introduction to the Sanatan Dharma or Hindu culture. “Chants of Hindu Gods and Goddesses in English Rhyme” offers an insightful and compelling cross section of one of the largest religions of the world. It will be of particular interest to the English-speaking Hindu population and anyone who enjoy studying religion and culture.

Hanuman Chalisa – A Sample:

With the dust of guru’s lotus feet having,
I cleanse the mirror of my soul sparkling,
Raghuvar’s spotless glory I be singing,
The four fruits of life it ever is giving.
I void of all the wisdom but realizing,
On the son of the wind am meditating,
Strength, wisdom, knowledge be his blessing,
Of the suffering and sin – may he be removing.
Hail Hanuman! Ocean of knowledge and virtue be,
Hail God-Monkey enlightener of the Worlds truly,
Ram’s envoy having incomparable might you be,
Son of Anjani and called Pavansuta lovingly.
Mighty, valiant, radiant as thunder-bolt you be,
Banisher of wickedness, befriender of wise surely,
Golden –hued, brilliant and bedecked charmingly,
Ear pendants sparkling and your head hair curly.
Your strong hands with thunderbolt and Ram’s flag be,
Across our shoulder holy `Janau’ ornamented surely,
O Shankara’s son – the delight of Kesari earnestly,
And world-wide is adored your greatness and glory.
Learned, accomplished and wise exceedingly,
Relentlessly carrying out Ram’s work unerringly,
And Ram’s actions as a beloved you hear eagerly,
In your heart Ram, Laxman and Sita dwell certainly.
Before Sita you appeared in a subtle form only,
But burnt Lanka in your awesome form clearly,
In your gigantic form you slew demons certainly,
And handled the work of Ram Chandra earnestly.
You saved Laxman by getting `sanjivini’ swiftly,
Then Lord Ram clasped you to himself joyously,
And Raghupati praised you ever whole-heartedly,
“You as dear to me as my brother Bharat surely”.
`My entire body and self sings in praise your glory’,
So saying Sripath, Lord Vishnu, embraces fondly,
Sanaka and Brahma – and other sages so holy,
Along with Narad and Sharad do also sing your glory.
Yama, Kuber and Digpal but ever sing earnestly,
As poets and scholars in your praise eternally,
To Sugriva you rendered your service gracefully,
Bringing Ram to him – showing kingdom’s path totally.
Vidbhishan on heeding your advise humbly,
Became Lanka’s King, the world knows – finally,
From thousands of miles in childhood fantasy,
You swallowed the sun thinking it fruit juicy.
With Lord Ram’s ring in your mouth totally,
You hopped across the Ocean – not surprisingly,
However difficult be all the tasks worldly,
By your favor be rendered possible easily.
You the guardian of Ram’s gate certainly,
Without your order none can enter clearly,
All bliss begot by surrender to you fully,
If you be the Savior fear is lost totally.
You but control your blazing splendor only,
The three worlds tremble with your roar surely,
Ghosts and goblins dare not come near fearfully,
When your name `Mahavir’ is sung repeatedly.
Illness destroyed and pain removed be,
Who repeat your name ever unceasingly,
Hanuman frees one from all the calamity,
Who on his thoughts, words, deeds meditating be.
Though Ram the supreme ascetic lord be,
Yet Hanuman fulfils his work successfully,
Whoever craves for you will undoubtedly be,
Sipping life’s nectar through life contently.
Through all four ages famed is your glory,
With all the fame you enlighten the world fully,
You the protector of saints and sages clearly,
Demons’ destroyer and Ram’s dear certainly.
You of eight siddhis nine nidhis giver be,
As Mother Janki gave this boon happily,
You the store-house of Ram’s love surely,
Remaining Ram’s servant ever unceasingly.
Ram enjoys your praise and hymns clearly,
Freeing the sadness of rebirths transmigratory,
In last days your worshipper – Ram achieves,
In birth – ever known as Hari’s devotee.
Those who don’t cherish any other God be,
By serving Hanuman still enjoy bliss fully,
Anyone repeating Hanuman’s name repeatedly,
Removes the sufferings and the calamities.
To Hanuman – All the Jai’s and glory,
Be gracious to me as my guru finally,
Those reciting these lines certainly be,
Bondage free – enjoying endless bliss only.
Those reciting the `Hanumanchalisa’ be,
Attaining perfection – Lord Shiv guarantees,
Tulsidas imploring Hanuman ever consistently,
To reside in his heart as in Ram Hanuman does be.
Pavanputra’ – of all calamities you dispelling,
